Yoga refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines that originated in India. The Sanskrit word Yoga has many meanings and is derived from the old language ‘Sanskrit’. The Sanskrit root ‘yuj’ means ‘to control’, ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’. The translations of yoga include ‘joining’, ‘uniting’, ‘union’, ‘conjunction’ and ‘means’. On the other hand, Yoga is about developing harmony between them. The references to yoga are available in ‘Upanishads’ and ‘Puranas’ composed by Indian Aryans in the later Vedic and post- Vedic period. The main credit for systematizing yoga goes to Patanjali who wrote ‘Yoga Sutra’, two thousand years ago. The term yoga is typically associated with Hatha Yoga and its Asanas or as a form of exercise. Yoga is a 5000 year old science, whose teachings were first imparted not in a classroom or Gurukul, but on the battle field.
